Paglia Orba: Iconic mountain in western Corsica
Mythical summit and hikes
Majestically dominating the interior of western Corsica, Paglia Orba is one of the island's most recognizable and iconic peaks. Rising to an altitude of 2,525 meters, it stands like a stone cathedral above the Niolu and Falasorma valleys, visible on clear days from the coast and the Galéria region.
Sometimes nicknamed the “Corsican Matterhorn” because of its pyramidal shape and steep walls, Paglia Orba impresses with its powerful relief and austere beauty. Unlike other peaks in the Monte Cinto massif, it has a particularly vertical north face, formed by dark, steep cliffs that contrast with the more open slopes of the south face.
This mountain occupies an important place in Corsican history and imagination. It has long served as a natural landmark for shepherds and travelers, and remains today a symbol of wild and untamed Corsica. Its environment, composed of mountain pastures, Laricio pine forests, and rocky chaos, is home to typical mountain fauna, including mouflons and birds of prey.
Paglia Orba attracts experienced hikers and mountaineers who come to explore the trails of the Corsica Regional Nature Park. The classic, demanding ascent offers exceptional views of the Cinto massif, high-altitude lakes and, on clear days, the Mediterranean Sea.
Even without climbing to its summit, admiring it from the surrounding valleys or mountain roads is already a breathtaking sight. Its imposing presence reminds us how spectacular the interior of the island is, just like its coastline.
An essential feature of the Corsican landscape, Paglia Orba embodies the raw power of the island's mountains and the exceptional diversity of its landscapes, between sea and high altitude.
